McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that guarantees children and youth experiencing homelessness the right to the same free, appropriate public education as any other student — including immediate enrollment, even without records like proof of residency, birth certificates, or immunization documentation that are normally required. Under the Act, students who lose stable housing can generally continue attending their school of origin, receive transportation to do so, and access the same programs and support services as their peers, without being segregated or stigmatized because of their housing situation. Each school district designates a local liaison to help identify students covered by the Act, connect families with resources, and resolve any enrollment disputes.
